Velur is in Namakkal district, in the interior of Tamil Nadu, where the land is open, cultivated and mostly flat. From above, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets. Several roads lead out of it in different directions and connect it to the villages and larger towns of the Kaveri basin.
Around that core the map loosens quickly. Field boundaries, irrigation channels and scattered hamlets fill the space between roads. Water matters here, and the river country to the south and west sets the rhythm of farming across the district. The town is a place where produce, trade and travel meet, not a place defined by a single monument.
