Viçosa lies in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, a region of rounded hills and green valleys. The town is best known as home to the Federal University of Viçosa, which grew out of an agricultural school founded in the 1920s and remains one of Brazil's leading centres for agricultural science.
