Vilcún lies in the Araucanía region of southern Chile, east of Temuco, in a landscape that rises from the central valley toward the Andes. On a map the town itself is small, a regular grid of blocks at the centre of a wide rural commune, surrounded by fields, farms and roads that run out in long, straight lines across the plain.
The commune extends eastward to include smaller settlements such as Cherquenco, and part of its territory lies within Conguillío National Park. The Llaima volcano, one of the most active in Chile, rises on the eastern edge, and the ground climbs steadily toward it. On the map, roads grow fewer and more winding as they approach the mountain.
