Te mapa
Wakuya is a town in Miyagi Prefecture, in Japan's Tōhoku region. It lies on the rice-growing plain north of Sendai, where flat fields of paddy meet low, forested hills. The town centre is small, with its streets clustered around the main roads and the railway, and much of the municipality is farmland.
Wakuya has an important place in Japanese history. In the eighth century gold was discovered here, the first gold found in Japan. It was sent to Nara to help gild the Great Buddha at Tōdai-ji. Koganeyama Shrine commemorates the discovery, and the town continues to celebrate this connection.
A Wakuya map poster shows a landscape of contrasts. The paddies form a fine, regular grid on the plain, the hills break it with wooded slopes and winding roads, and the town sits where the two meet. The pattern is typical of rural Tōhoku, calm and orderly, and it translates well into a black-and-white print.
The rice fields are divided into regular rectangular plots. On the map they form a fine, even texture that covers much of the frame.
Wooded hills rise at the edge of the plain. There, roads bend and the paddy pattern gives way to more irregular shapes.
Koganeyama Shrine marks the site linked to Japan's first gold discovery. It is a small but historically important place within the town.
