Weining lies high on the Wumeng plateau in western Guizhou, and on a map the town looks like a compact grid of streets set into a broad upland basin. The main roads follow the valley floor and then turn into winding routes that climb into the hills around it. The pattern is tighter than in many lowland towns because the flat ground runs out quickly.
Just beside the town lies Caohai, the Grass Sea, one of the largest natural freshwater lakes on the Guizhou plateau. It is a protected wetland known for the black-necked cranes that spend the winter there. On paper it shows as a large, softly edged shape, and the built-up area stops close to its shore.
