Te mapa
West Island is the administrative centre of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean. The territory's southern atoll forms a rough horseshoe of low coral islands around a shallow lagoon, and West Island lies along its western side. It houses the territory's administration and airport, and a small community drawn largely from mainland Australia.
On a map the island is long, narrow and almost straight. The airstrip runs along much of its length as the single dominant built feature, while a handful of roads and buildings cluster near it. On one side lies the open ocean, on the other the wide lagoon, so the land itself becomes a thin band between two very different kinds of water.
Across the lagoon lies Home Island, home to the Cocos Malay community, whose families have lived on the atoll since the nineteenth century, when the Clunies-Ross family ran the islands as a coconut plantation. A West Island map poster, framed wider, can take in the curve of the atoll itself, a rare subject where geography does nearly all of the drawing.
A long runway occupies much of the island's length, a bold straight line that turns a small coral island into one of the most graphic shapes on the map.
The eastern side faces the shallow atoll lagoon, a broad, calm expanse that separates West Island from the other islands of the southern atoll.
At a wider scale, the islands form a broken horseshoe of coral around the lagoon, with West Island as one long arm of the ring.

Koteā ko West Island
West Island suits people who have lived or worked on Cocos, those who have visited for its lagoon and reefs, and anyone fond of atolls and far-flung islands. The composition is minimal and elegant, a thin strip of land between waters, and it works well in a clean, modern room.
You can set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with the date of a posting, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy six print-ready sizes for $9, or order a framed or unframed printed poster.
