West Seneca is a town in Erie County, New York, bordering the city of Buffalo to the southeast. Its map is shaped by water: Buffalo Creek, Cazenovia Creek and Cayuga Creek wind across the town in looping curves, and the suburban streets have been fitted around them. The result is a pattern of residential cul-de-sacs and long arterial roads that bend wherever a creek does.
Two expressways give the map its hard lines. The New York State Thruway passes through the town, and the Aurora Expressway heads southeast from it, both drawn as smooth sweeping curves with interchanges that stand out against the smaller residential grid. Seneca Street and Union Road act as older spines, with commercial strips and neighbourhoods arranged along them.
A West Seneca map poster also carries some history in its name. In the 1840s the area was settled by the Ebenezer Society, a religious community that later moved west to found the Amana Colonies in Iowa. Today the creeks, parks and curving streets give the town a softer, greener outline than the tighter grid of neighbouring Buffalo.
