Witham lies in mid-Essex between Chelmsford and Colchester, on the line of the Roman road that once linked London with Colchester. That long route still shapes the town. It runs through the historic centre as a main street of older buildings, and the later town grew up around it. On the map this gives Witham a clear central axis, with neighbourhoods on either side.
The River Brain winds through the town and joins the Blackwater nearby, leaving a band of green along its course. The main railway line from London to the east cuts across town, and the A12 bypass runs along its edge. The crime writer Dorothy L. Sayers lived in Witham for many years, and a statue of her stands in the town.
Post-war expansion added estates of curving streets and cul-de-sacs, which contrast neatly with the straight old road at the core.
