Te mapa
Xiaochuan is a small town in southern Gansu province, in the mountainous country where the Loess Plateau gives way to the ranges that lead toward Sichuan. In this terrain, settlements tend to follow the valley floors, and roads keep close to the rivers because there is little flat ground anywhere else.
On a map, the town appears as a narrow, elongated cluster of streets along its valley, with the main road and the watercourse running side by side. Steep slopes rise on either side, crossed only by winding tracks that climb to villages and fields on the terraced hillsides.
A Xiaochuan map poster turns this linear, valley-bound form into an elegant composition. The town reads as a slender band of streets threaded between mountains, with fine switchback roads and streams branching from it. It is a very different image from a flat city grid, shaped entirely by the land around it.
The town stretches along the valley bottom, where the flattest ground lies, creating a long and narrow street pattern rather than a compact centre.
The main road and the river run alongside each other through the valley, two parallel lines that organise the whole settlement.
Winding tracks climb from the valley into the surrounding slopes, linking the town with villages and terraced fields higher up.
