Xigaoshan lies in the south of Gansu province, in rugged mountain country where the land rises and falls steeply and settlements follow the valley floors. Towns here are typically long and narrow, shaped by rivers and the slopes that rise sharply on either side.
From above, Xigaoshan's streets concentrate where the ground is level enough to build, with a main road following the valley and shorter lanes climbing a little way up the hillsides. Beyond the town, terraced fields and mountain roads cut across the slopes in winding lines.
