Te mapa
Xuanhua is a district of Zhangjiakou in northern Hebei, in the valley of the Yang River with mountains rising on both sides. During the Ming dynasty it was a major garrison town guarding the approaches to Beijing as part of the defences around the Great Wall. The outline of its old walled city is still recognisable on the map as a large rectangle.
Inside that rectangle, the streets follow a planned grid aligned with the compass points, and gate towers mark the old city's axes. Outside it, newer districts have grown along the valley and the main roads. The area is also known for traditional grape growing. Its vineyards use an old funnel-shaped trellis system that is recognised as agricultural heritage.
A Xuanhua map poster works because its history is written in the plan. The square walled town sits clearly within the later city, and the valley gives the composition a long, directional shape. The mountains on either side leave open space around it. It is a Ming garrison layout that can still be read clearly on a modern street map.
The former garrison town forms a large rectangle with a regular internal grid. It is the most distinctive element on the map and a direct legacy of the Ming period.
The river runs through the broad valley beside the town, and the city stretches along it between the surrounding mountain ranges.
Traditional grape gardens around the town use a distinctive funnel-shaped trellis. This centuries-old practice is recognised as an agricultural heritage system.
