Zhangjiakou lies in the northwest of Hebei province, on the edge of the Mongolian plateau. From above, the city stretches along a narrow valley, with the Qingshui River running through it from north to south and bare hills rising on both sides. The streets form a long, compressed grid that widens only where the valley opens out to the south.
For centuries the city was a gateway between the North China Plain and the steppes of Inner Mongolia, and a trade route to the north once passed through here. The Dajingmen gate in the Great Wall, on the city's northern side, marked the crossing point. Remnants of the wall and its watchtowers still line the hills of the upper valley.
Zhangjiakou co-hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics, with skiing and snowboarding events held in the mountains of Chongli district to the north, and high-speed rail now links the city to Beijing. A Zhangjiakou map poster shows the essential shape of a frontier city. A river runs through a narrow ribbon of streets squeezed between hills that points toward the plateau.
The river runs the length of the city. Its straightened channel and embankments form a central spine that organises the streets on either side.
Hills hem in the city's street grid, keeping it long and narrow. This compressed pattern gives the poster an unusual vertical emphasis.
The Dajingmen gate on the city's northern edge marks where the Great Wall crosses the valley. This historic point anchors the top of the map.

Koteā ko Zhangjiakou
For people connected to Zhangjiakou through family, work or the 2022 Winter Games, the city's valley shape is easy to recognise. A map shows the relationship between river, hills and streets more clearly than a photograph can.
