Te mapa
Yorkton is a city in eastern Saskatchewan, set on the open prairie that stretches for hundreds of kilometres in every direction. On a map it appears as a clear grid of streets and avenues, laid out in the square, practical pattern common to prairie cities, with highways and rail lines forming strong lines across and around it.
Beyond the city limits the land is divided into the large rectangular sections of the prairie survey, with farm roads running at right angles and grain fields filling the spaces between. The overall effect is geometric and calm, with only small creeks, sloughs and parks breaking up the straight lines.
A Yorkton map poster shows the city at the centre of this larger grid. Yorkton is home to the Yorkton Film Festival, which began in 1947 and is the longest-running film festival in North America. The region also has deep Ukrainian roots, reflected in the church domes that are found across the surrounding countryside.
Streets and avenues form a regular, square pattern, the typical layout of a Saskatchewan city, easy to read and strong on paper.
Major roads and railway lines cross and skirt the city, forming the longest straight lines on the poster and linking it to the region.
Outside the city, farmland is divided into large rectangular sections by grid roads, extending the geometric pattern to the edges of the map.
