Te mapa
Yuen Long spreads across the northwestern New Territories of Hong Kong, on one of the few broad areas of flat land in the territory. Seen from above, it is a patchwork: a dense town centre, high-rise new towns such as Tin Shui Wai, older villages scattered across the plain, and to the north a wide field of fishponds leading to the wetlands of Deep Bay.
The district holds some of Hong Kong's best known traditional settlements. Walled villages in Kam Tin and the ancestral halls along the Ping Shan Heritage Trail are reminders of the lineages that farmed this plain for centuries. The Mai Po wetlands, an important stop for migratory birds, lie on the northern edge facing Shenzhen across the bay.
A Yuen Long map poster works at a broader scale than the town centre alone. The fishponds appear as a mosaic of small rectangles, the new towns as tight clusters of curved roads, and the hills to the south as a quiet, empty edge. Together they make a map with many textures in one frame.
North of the town, hundreds of rectangular ponds form a distinctive grid of water, one of the most recognisable patterns anywhere on a Hong Kong map.
Old village settlements dot the plain, their compact footprints standing apart from the modern street network and hinting at the district's long agricultural past.
Planned towns such as Tin Shui Wai appear as dense, curving road systems with Light Rail lines looping through them, contrasting with the open plain around.
