Te mapa
Chek Lap Kok was once a small, hilly island off the north coast of Lantau in Hong Kong. In the 1990s it was levelled and joined to the neighbouring islet of Lam Chau by land reclamation. The result became the platform for Hong Kong International Airport, which opened in 1998. On a map it now looks less like an island than a drawn rectangle.
Parallel runways run along its length, and the terminal buildings, aprons and taxiways fill the space between them. Together they form one of the most geometric shapes on the whole coast. In recent years a further runway, built on newly reclaimed land to the north, has expanded the platform again and added another straight band to the outline.
Bridges and viaducts tie the island to Tung Chung on Lantau, and the rail and road links toward Kowloon run along the shore. A Chek Lap Kok map poster turns this engineered landscape into graphic art, with straight edges and long parallel lines set right beside the steep, uneven slopes of Lantau.
Long parallel runways stretch east to west across the island. They give the map a bold, ruled pattern that reads almost like an architectural drawing.
Most of the coastline is artificial, with straight seawalls and sharp corners. Only traces of the original island's shape remain, so the outline is unlike any natural coast.
A short crossing links the airport island to Tung Chung on Lantau, where roads, rail and the new town meet the steep hillsides of the larger island.

For pilots, cabin crew, aviation fans and anyone who has flown in and out of Hong Kong many times, this is a meaningful shape. Its clean geometry also works on a wall simply as modern design.
