Te mapa
Tung Chung lies on the northern coast of Lantau Island in Hong Kong, facing the airport island of Chek Lap Kok across a narrow channel. From above, the new town appears as a cluster of tall housing estates on reclaimed land along the shore, with steep, green mountains rising sharply behind it. Expressways and the rail line connect it to the airport and the rest of Hong Kong.
The new town grew alongside the airport, which opened in 1998. Before that, the area was a quiet valley of villages, and the old Tung Chung Fort still stands inland. Today Tung Chung is also where the Ngong Ping 360 cable car starts, climbing across the hills to the Tian Tan Buddha.
A Tung Chung map poster shows a place defined by contrast. The dense new town and the flat, geometric airport island sit along the water, while the mountains behind are almost empty of streets. In black and white, reclaimed coastline, towers and steep hillsides form a sharp, modern composition, typical of Hong Kong's edge between city and nature.
A narrow stretch of water separates Tung Chung from the airport island, whose runways form a large, straight-edged shape across the map.
The new town sits largely on reclaimed land, its straight edges and planned estates contrasting with the natural coastline further along.
Steep, green hills rise directly behind the town and are almost untouched by streets, giving the map a large, quiet area of open space.

Tung Chung is home for many families who moved there as the new town grew, and a first view of Hong Kong for many travellers. Its map is a clear record of that edge between city and mountain.
