Yuexi lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the dissected hill country that stretches north of the Yangtze in this region. On a map, the terrain is the whole story. Flat land is scarce, so the built-up area follows the valley floors, and there are no long straight roads.
Roads snake along contour lines and switch back up the slopes, joining the settlement to farming hamlets on the hillsides around it. Terraced fields and scattered houses cover the surrounding land.
