Zapala lies in the province of Neuquén in Argentine Patagonia, on the high, windswept steppe east of the Andes. From above, it is a tidy grid of streets set in almost entirely open country, with long highways meeting near the town and stretching away across the plateau in straight lines.
The town grew as the terminus of a railway line from the Atlantic coast and remains an important road junction, where routes toward the Andes, the lakes region and the provincial capital converge. Laguna Blanca National Park, known for its birdlife, lies a short drive to the southwest.
