Te mapa
Zavolzh’ye stands on the left bank of the Volga in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, facing the old town of Gorodets across the water. The Nizhny Novgorod hydroelectric station and its dam lie at the edge of town, holding back the wide Gorky Reservoir upstream, and the river below narrows back into its normal course.
The town is best known for the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant, whose engines have been used in many Russian vehicles. On the map its planned residential districts sit in orderly blocks, with the industrial zone set apart and large patches of pine forest pressing in from the east.
A Zavolzh’ye map poster shows a place defined by water engineering and industry, framed by one of the great rivers of Europe. It is a strong choice for people who grew up here, worked at the plant, or crossed the dam to Gorodets many times.
The hydroelectric dam cuts across the Volga at the edge of town, with the broad Gorky Reservoir spreading upstream and a narrower river channel continuing below it.
Across the Volga lies Gorodets, and the two towns mirror each other on opposite banks, joined by the crossing over the dam and separated by open water.
Residential areas form regular Soviet-era blocks and straight avenues, a tidy grid that sits between the riverbank, the industrial zone and the surrounding forest.
