Zhanhe is a small township in northwest Yunnan, in the Lijiang region, where high ridges and deep valleys shape everything built on them. From above, the settlement is held in a valley, and its streets stretch along the level ground rather than spreading in every direction. Roads leading out of town wind through the surrounding mountains in long curves and switchbacks.
This is country where the terrain does the planning. Farmland takes up whatever flat or terraced land is available, and villages sit where valleys widen.
