Te mapa
Zuhres lies in Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, and its name comes from the thermal power station around which it grew, the Zuivka plant. On a map, the power station and its cooling reservoir are the defining features. A broad sheet of water spreads out beside the town, and the large industrial site sits at its edge.
The residential districts follow the planning of a Soviet industrial settlement, with regular streets, blocks of apartment buildings and areas of low-rise housing, laid out to serve the workers of the plant. Roads and a railway connect the town to the neighbouring settlements of the Donbas, across a landscape of steppe, small valleys and mining traces.
A Zuhres map poster shows an unusual town, one whose shape and even its name come from a single piece of infrastructure. The contrast between the smooth open reservoir and the ordered housing grid makes a strong graphic, and a meaningful one for people who grew up beside the water.
A large body of water next to the town forms the biggest open shape on the map, a calm, smooth area against the streets.
The thermal plant that gave the town its name occupies a large industrial site, an unmistakable block at the edge of the town.
Residential areas follow the regular layout of a Soviet-era company town, with straight streets and evenly spaced blocks.

For people who were born in Zuhres or spent summers by its reservoir, a map is a way of holding onto a place that is hard to visit. It keeps the streets and the water in their true shape.
