The map

About this Xico map poster

Xico lies in the southeast of the Valley of Mexico, in the municipality of Valle de Chalco Solidaridad. The land here was once part of Lake Chalco. From above it is almost perfectly flat, and a remarkably regular grid of small blocks fills it. Long straight avenues cut across the grid, and the pattern repeats with very little variation, which makes it striking at poster scale.

The most distinctive shape is Cerro Xico, a small, nearly circular volcanic cone at the edge of the urban area. On a map it shows as a round, empty space ringed by streets, an old natural form surrounded by a much younger city. Most of the area was settled quickly in the late twentieth century, and the orderly street plan reflects that.

A Xico map poster captures a side of greater Mexico City that is rarely drawn. There are no famous monuments here, just the repeated rhythm of homes, markets and schools on reclaimed ground. At large sizes the density of the blocks becomes a texture in itself, broken only by the hill and by the open land that remains toward the south.

Cerro Xico

A compact volcanic cone beside the city. Its rounded outline breaks the grid and gives the map a clear focal point.

Lakebed grid

Streets laid out on the flat floor of the former Lake Chalco, forming one of the most uniform block patterns in the region.

Main avenues

A few long, straight roads cross the neighbourhoods and link Xico to the wider metropolitan area.

Why Xico

A map that means something

Xico is home to many families who helped build it block by block. A map of it is a personal record of a place that guidebooks tend to leave out, and an honest picture of how the valley has grown.

Add a family name, a street or a moving-in year to the title and subtitle, and adjust the coordinates line if you wish. Then pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit the room.
