Yeongju lies in the north of Gyeongsangbuk-do, near the Sobaek mountains. The city centre sits on a valley floor where streams come together. Its dense core of blocks is pressed between hills, and main roads and the railway follow the valleys. The Yeongju area has two of Korea's most important heritage sites. Buseoksa Temple, on a mountainside, has one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in the country. Sosu Seowon is regarded as Korea's first Confucian academy. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The city is also an entry point to Sobaeksan National Park, whose ridges rise to the north.
