About this Zabīd map poster
Zabīd stands on the Tihama, the hot coastal plain along Yemen's Red Sea shore, a short distance inland from the sea. For several centuries it was a capital of the region and one of the great centres of learning in the Islamic world. It was known for its mosques and schools, including the Al-Asha'ir Mosque.
From above, the historic town has a rounded, compact outline. Inside it, courtyard houses and narrow, winding lanes form a fine, cellular pattern, broken by small squares and the footprints of mosques. Newer roads and buildings spread outward from the old perimeter across the flat surrounding land.
The old town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and has been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2000. A Zabīd map poster records its plan as it survives today: a closely built historic core surrounded by open plain.
