The map

About this Zharkent map poster

Zharkent lies in south-eastern Kazakhstan, in the broad valley of the Ili river, only a short distance from the border with China. It was founded in 1882 as a Russian frontier settlement, and the plan still reflects that origin: a regular grid of straight, tree-lined streets laid out across the flat valley floor.

Irrigation channels run through and around the town, feeding orchards and fields, and to the north the land rises toward the Dzungarian Alatau range. The Ili itself flows to the south, and the Khorgos border crossing, with its large trade and logistics zone, lies a little to the east.

The town's best-known building is the Zharkent Mosque, completed in the 1890s in a style that blends Chinese temple architecture with Central Asian forms. A Zharkent map poster shows a frontier town of orderly blocks set within a wide valley, at a crossroads between Kazakhstan and China.

Frontier grid

Straight streets cross at right angles across the whole town, a disciplined nineteenth-century layout that reads clearly and evenly from above.

02

Irrigation channels

Canals and ditches run alongside streets and fields, adding fine lines of water that tie the town to the agricultural valley around it.

03

Mosque compound

The walled grounds of the Zharkent Mosque form a distinct enclosed shape within the grid, marking the town's most famous landmark.
