The map
Znojmo stands in the south of Moravia, close to the Austrian border, on a rocky promontory above the valley of the Dyje River. On a map the old town is unmistakable: a tight knot of irregular medieval streets and squares, bounded on one side by the steep drop to the river and elsewhere by the line of former walls, now traced by roads and gardens.
At the edge of the spur stand Znojmo Castle and the Romanesque rotunda of St Catherine, known for its rare 12th-century wall paintings. Beneath the streets runs an extensive network of historic cellars and tunnels. The town is the centre of a well-known wine region, and to the west the Dyje winds through Podyjí National Park in a deep valley.
A Znojmo map poster brings together the dense medieval centre, the curve of the river and the more open neighbourhoods of the 19th and 20th centuries around it. The reservoir on the Dyje west of town adds a clean shape to the composition, and the surrounding vineyards give the outer frame a gentle, ordered texture.
The old town ends in a rocky spur above the Dyje, where the castle and rotunda stand at the edge of a steep drop, clearly readable in the street pattern.
The river loops beneath the town in a deep valley, a strong curved line that frames the old centre before continuing downstream through open country.
Inside the old town, narrow lanes and irregular squares form a dense, organic network, the most detailed and intricate part of the poster.
