The district

About this Albaicín map poster

The Albaicín covers a hill on the north side of Granada, directly opposite the Alhambra across the valley of the river Darro. It is one of the oldest parts of the city, and its layout still follows the medieval Moorish town, when the neighbourhood was densely inhabited. Together with the Alhambra and the Generalife, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From above, the streets refuse any grid. Narrow lanes and stepped alleys twist along the contours, fork and end in small squares, while walled gardens break up the blocks. These gardens belong to the carmenes, traditional houses whose green interiors turn the neighbourhood into a pattern of solid walls and hidden open space. At the bottom, the Carrera del Darro follows the river.

Visitors climb to viewpoints such as the Mirador de San Nicolás to look across at the Alhambra, with the Sierra Nevada behind it. To the east, the hillside continues into Sacromonte, known for its cave dwellings. An Albaicín map poster captures the density and irregularity of the quarter, a street network drawn almost entirely in curves.

01

Carrera del Darro

The street along the river Darro forms the southern edge of the quarter, a narrow line of road and water between the Albaicín and the Alhambra hill.

02

Mirador de San Nicolás

This terrace high on the hill appears as a small open space in the dense street pattern. It is the best-known viewpoint towards the Alhambra.

03

Carmen gardens

Enclosed gardens behind high walls break the blocks into irregular shapes. They give the map its distinctive mix of tight lanes and hidden interior space.

Why Albaicín

A map that means something

The Albaicín is a map for anyone who has happily got lost in its lanes, studied in Granada or watched the sunset from San Nicolás. Its dense, curving streets reward close looking and are at their best at the larger print sizes.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the name of a carmen or the date of a trip, then pick one of five styles. Sand and Paper suit the warm tones of the hillside, while Noir makes the lanes stand out sharply.
