The coast

About this Costa del Sol map poster

The Costa del Sol runs along the Mediterranean coast of the province of Málaga in Andalusia, from Nerja in the east to the area around Manilva, close to Gibraltar, in the west. From above it is an almost unbroken strip of towns: Málaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona follow one another along a gently curving shore, with mountains rising steeply behind.

Málaga, the main city of the coast, has the Moorish Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro castle on a hill above its port, and Pablo Picasso was born there in 1881. The coast grew quickly as a holiday destination from the middle of the twentieth century, which explains the dense resort streets, golf courses and marinas such as Puerto Banús near Marbella.

A Costa del Sol map poster follows the layers of the coast: beaches and promenades at the waterline, then the old coastal road, then the motorways cut higher up the slopes. Behind Marbella the Sierra Blanca rises sharply, and small white villages sit on the hillsides, their tight street patterns quite unlike the planned resort districts below.

01

Málaga's hill

The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro sit on a rise above the port, with the old town's winding lanes gathered at their foot and the Guadalmedina riverbed cutting through.

02

Coastal corridor

Roads, railway and towns are squeezed into the narrow strip between sea and mountains, forming a continuous band of development along the shore.

03

Puerto Banús

The marina west of Marbella appears as a compact, geometric basin of piers and breakwaters set into an otherwise smooth coastline.
