Allanridge is a town on the Free State goldfields of South Africa, part of the cluster of settlements that grew up in the mid-twentieth century around deep-level gold mining. The land is flat highveld, and from above the town looks like a single planned unit: residential streets laid out deliberately, surrounded by open veld and the large, clean-edged footprints of mining land.
The street plan is more orderly than an older organic town. Curving residential roads and regular blocks sit within a clear boundary, and a few main routes connect to the neighbouring goldfields towns. Mine dumps and industrial sites form distinct blank or geometric shapes on the map, which gives a black-and-white print more contrast than the size of the town would suggest.
