The map

About this Baden map poster

Baden is in the canton of Aargau, where the Limmat forces its way through a narrow gap in the Jura foothills. The river bends sharply here, and the town follows it closely. The medieval old town climbs a slope on one bank below the ruins of Stein castle. A covered wooden bridge links it to the Landvogteischloss on the far side, a short crossing that is easy to find on any map.

Downstream, where the river curves again, is the bath quarter. Hot mineral springs have drawn visitors here since Roman times, when the settlement was called Aquae Helveticae. In the late nineteenth century Baden also became an industrial town: Brown, Boveri & Cie was founded here in 1891, and its large factory grounds shaped the district west of the station.

A Baden map poster brings these layers together in one frame: the winding river, the tight old town, the bath quarter at the bend, the rail lines through the gap and the wooded hills pressing in. Few Swiss towns fit so much variety into so small an area, and the black-and-white drawing makes each part easy to read.

01

Limmat bend

The river takes a sharp, deep curve through the town. It is the dominant line on the map and explains why the streets had to squeeze into such a narrow space.

02

Covered wooden bridge

A historic wooden bridge crosses from the old town to the Landvogteischloss. It is a short, precise link that anchors the heart of Baden on paper.

03

Bath quarter

The thermal baths sit at the river's lower bend. People have used the hot springs since the Roman settlement of Aquae Helveticae, and they gave the town its name.

Why Baden

A map that means something

Baden is somewhere people commute from, study in or come back to for the baths, and its map is unusually full for a town of its size. It suits a Zurich flat as easily as a family home in Aargau.

You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose one of five styles, from Classic black & white to Blueprint. Order a printed poster on matte paper with an optional wooden frame, or download the $9 HD files and print them locally.
