Several village centres
Balen consists of multiple village cores, each a small cluster of streets, which gives the poster several points of interest rather than one centre.

The map
Balen lies in the Kempen, or Campine, the sandy, low-lying region in the east of Antwerp province. The municipality is made up of several village centres rather than one dense town, and the map shows them as separate clusters of streets joined by long, straight connecting roads. Between them lie fields, woodland and the remains of the heath that once covered much of the region.
The Grote Nete river passes through the area, its valley marked by wetter ground and meadows that break up the pattern of fields. Industry has also shaped Balen: non-ferrous metal processing has long been part of the local economy, and industrial sites appear as large, regular blocks set apart from the villages.
A Balen map poster reflects that spread-out, polycentric character. Instead of a single focal point, several small knots of streets sit within a calm field of roads and waterways. The Nete's winding line adds a natural curve across the design, softening the straight routes of the Campine.

The Grote Nete winds through the municipality, its course a gentle irregular line surrounded by meadows and low wet ground.
Long straight roads cross the flat, sandy landscape between villages, an orderly network typical of the Kempen that ties the composition together.
