The escarpment
A steep wall of rock divides the city into two levels. On the map, roads compress into tight bends where they climb it, making the cliff edge the clearest line in the composition.

The map
Bamenda sits in the grassfields of Cameroon's western highlands, and its map is shaped by one dramatic line: the escarpment that separates Up Station from the town below. On paper this appears as a tight band of switchback roads climbing from the valley floor to the plateau edge, where the old administrative quarter looks down over a spread of residential streets that follow the folds of the land rather than any grid.
Below the cliff, the lower town fans out along a few main roads, with some neighbourhoods known by the mileposts along them. Streams cut shallow valleys between the hills, so the street pattern breaks into irregular clusters linked by winding connectors. A Bamenda map poster renders this terrain-driven layout in fine black lines, where density thickens in the centre and loosens into scattered compounds toward the surrounding green slopes.
As capital of the North-West Region, Bamenda is one of the main centres of Cameroon's English-speaking community, and it serves as the gateway to the Ring Road, a long loop through the highland kingdoms of the grassfields. The city's elevation gives it a cooler climate than much of the country, and from the escarpment the whole urban basin is visible at once, much as it appears on a map.
A steep wall of rock divides the city into two levels. On the map, roads compress into tight bends where they climb it, making the cliff edge the clearest line in the composition.
The upper quarter on the plateau holds government buildings from the colonial era. Its streets are sparse and widely spaced, a quiet contrast to the dense lower town.
Beyond the built-up area, rounded hills and stream valleys take over. Streets thin into single tracks, so the edges of the poster fade gradually rather than ending abruptly.

Why Bamenda
Bamenda is home, or was home, to many people now living far from Cameroon, and a map of its two levels is an easy way to keep the place in view. Add a family name as the title, a year as the subtitle, and keep the coordinates line underneath.
Choose Classic black & white for crisp contrast, Noir for a dark wall, or Paper and Sand for warmer tones; Blueprint suits a study. Download HD files for $9 in six print sizes, or order a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
