The map

About this Buea map poster

Buea is built on the south-eastern flank of Mount Cameroon, the highest peak in West Africa, and the mountain shapes everything about its map. The streets do not sit on a flat grid here. They follow the slope, stretching in long strands uphill and linking separate quarters along the hillside. Below the town, the land drops toward the coastal plain and the Atlantic.

The town has a layered past. It was the capital of German Kamerun around the turn of the twentieth century, and some colonial buildings from that time still stand in its upper quarters. Today it is the capital of the South-West Region and home to the University of Buea, whose campus draws students from across the country.

A Buea map poster shows a place defined by altitude. The roads thin out as they climb, then stop where the mountain forest begins. That leaves a blank upper edge that stands in for the volcano itself. The result is a quiet composition with a clear direction, the whole town seeming to lean toward the summit above it.

01

Mountain slope

Streets run up and across the flank of Mount Cameroon, curving along the slope instead of forming a grid, which gives the map a strong diagonal movement.

02

Upper town

The higher quarters, linked to the old German colonial administration, sit closer to the forest edge. Their roads are looser and more widely spaced.

03

University district

Lower down, the area around the University of Buea is denser, with a tighter mesh of streets that filled in as the student population grew.

Why Buea

A map that means something

People remember Buea for its climate and its mountain: cool mornings, mist on the slope, the long walk uphill. Graduates of the university and families from the South-West often want a map that holds that sense of place on one sheet.

The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised, so the poster can mark a graduation year, a family home or a first address. Pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
