About this Bioko map poster
Bioko lies in the Gulf of Guinea, much closer to the coast of Cameroon than to mainland Equatorial Guinea, yet it holds the country's capital, Malabo. The island is long and rounded, runs from northeast to southwest, and is almost entirely volcanic. On a map, most roads and settlements cling to the coast, and the steep interior is left largely open.
Pico Basilé, the island's highest mountain, rises in the north just behind Malabo, with a road climbing toward the summit. The south is wetter and more remote. There, the Gran Caldera de Luba and forested slopes run down to beaches where sea turtles nest. Much of the southern land is protected and known for its rare primates.
Under Spanish rule the island was called Fernando Pó, after the Portuguese navigator usually credited with sighting it. Malabo keeps a compact colonial street grid on the coast around its bay, the most regular pattern on the island.
