Canals through the city

The map
Ban Bang Bamru lies on the Thonburi side of Bangkok, west of the Chao Phraya River in Bang Phlat district. It is a residential area rather than a separate town. Its map shows the layered texture of the western city: narrow sois branching off major roads, small housing blocks packed between them, and canals winding through it all.
The Southern Line railway passes through the area, and Bang Bamru station serves trains leaving the capital for the south. The straight track contrasts with the district's older pattern, which grew up around the water. Khlongs were once the main routes here, and they still trace irregular lines between the streets and houses.
Just to the east, the Chao Phraya curves broadly toward the historic centre on the opposite bank. A Ban Bang Bamru map poster frames this ordinary but intricate corner of Bangkok and shows how canals, railway and modern roads overlap. That relationship is hard to grasp from street level but becomes clear from above.

The rail line cuts across the district in a long, straight stroke. Bang Bamru station marks the point where the city's old and new routes meet.
Short, narrow lanes branch off the main roads like the teeth of a comb, creating the fine, dense pattern typical of residential Bangkok.

Why Ban Bang Bamru
Bangkok is often pictured through its temples and towers, but most people live in places like Bang Bamru. A map of the neighbourhood is a personal choice for someone who grew up near the canals, still takes the train from the local station or has recently moved away.
