The map
Ban Huai Thalaeng is the main town of Huai Thalaeng district in Nakhon Ratchasima province, on the Khorat Plateau of north-eastern Thailand. The land here is almost perfectly flat. From above, the town is a small, fairly regular street grid with a market area and public buildings, surrounded by an intricate patchwork of rice paddies, farm ponds and village roads.
Life here centres on farming and on the town's role as a local market and administrative hub for the surrounding villages. As across Isan, the landscape changes with the seasons, from flooded, bright-green paddies in the rains to dry, bare fields afterwards, and water storage shapes much of the land.
A Ban Huai Thalaeng map poster reduces all this to a clean, graphic image: a compact built core, a few straight roads leading out, and a fine lattice of field boundaries around it. The flatness of the plateau means the lines are especially regular, which gives the print an almost textile-like quality.
The centre of the town forms a small, orderly grid of streets and shophouse blocks. It sits clearly at the heart of the composition.
Rice fields surround the town in small, irregular plots divided by bunds and tracks. They create a fine mesh of lines across the plateau.
Reservoirs and ponds dot the land around the town. They appear as simple solid shapes scattered through the surrounding fields.
