The map
Ban Phaeo is a district town in the western part of Samut Sakhon province, southwest of Bangkok in central Thailand. The land is completely flat, part of the low river plain near the Gulf of Thailand. From above, the town is a small cluster of streets, but the surrounding landscape is striking: a dense network of canals, ditches and narrow raised plots stretching in every direction.
In this part of Thailand, canals have long served as roads, drainage and irrigation all at once. The area around Ban Phaeo lies between the Tha Chin and Mae Klong rivers, and it is known for its orchards and farms. It also lies near the canal country around Damnoen Saduak, famous for its floating market.
A Ban Phaeo map poster is a study in water. Straight khlong lines cross the plain, orchard plots form narrow parallel strips, and the town's streets sit where roads and canals meet. There are no hills to break the pattern. The result is a fine, almost textile-like design that looks very different from most city maps.
Straight khlongs and smaller channels cross the district in all directions. They are the main structural lines of the map, rather than roads.
Farmland is divided into narrow raised beds between ditches, creating fine parallel lines that give the map a woven texture.
The district lies on the flat plain between the Tha Chin and Mae Klong rivers, where water connects the towns more than roads do.

Why Ban Phaeo
Ban Phaeo suits families from Samut Sakhon, people who know the canal country west of Bangkok, and anyone who likes maps as textured patterns. The dense web of waterways makes an image that works as abstract art.
