The map
Baotou lies in Inner Mongolia, on the north bank of the Yellow River. From above, the city spreads across a broad plain between the river to the south and the Yin Mountains to the north. Its districts are laid out in large, separate clusters, connected by wide roads and rail lines.
The city grew rapidly in the twentieth century as a centre for steel and heavy industry. This shows on the map in the form of large industrial areas, rail yards and wide avenues. Residential districts follow a regular grid, often with large blocks and generous spacing between them.
North of the city lies the Bayan Obo mining area, one of the world's most important sources of rare earth elements. Closer to the city, small rivers flow down from the mountains toward the Yellow River, breaking the grid. A Baotou map poster shows a city defined by industry, open space and the river.
The Yellow River flows along the southern edge of the city. Its wide floodplain and channels form a natural boundary below the built-up districts.
Baotou's districts form distinct clusters rather than one continuous centre. Wide roads and rail lines link them across open land.
The Yin Mountains rise to the north. On the map they create an edge where the regular street grid gives way to rougher terrain.
