About this Dongsheng map poster
Dongsheng is the historic centre of Ordos, in the southwest of Inner Mongolia, on the high, dry Ordos Plateau inside the great northern loop of the Yellow River. On a map the city sits among rolling hills and eroded gullies, and its streets adapt to the uneven ground. Broad avenues cross the centre, and roads bend along valleys at the edges.
The city grew rapidly in the early twenty-first century, driven by the coal and natural gas industries of the surrounding region. Much of that growth appears on the map as wide, straight roads and large new blocks laid out alongside the older, finer streets of the centre. The contrast between these two scales is one of the most distinctive features of its layout.
