The map

About this Beaumont map poster

Beaumont sits in southeast Texas on the west bank of the Neches River, inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The map shows a regular downtown grid close to the river, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods and crossed by Interstate 10. Beyond the city the Neches winds through marsh and forest toward Port Arthur and Sabine Lake, and bayous thread through the flat land on every side.

Beaumont became famous in 1901, when the Lucas gusher at Spindletop, a salt dome just south of the city, blew oil high into the air for days. The discovery marked the start of the modern oil industry in Texas. The city grew rapidly around refineries, pipelines and a busy port, and much of that industrial landscape still lines the river on the map.

With Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a region shaped by oil, shipping and the waterways of the coast. A Beaumont map poster shows the city's layout in detail, from the downtown grid and the Lamar University campus to the curve of the river and the port facilities along it.
