About this Shreveport map poster
Shreveport stands on the west bank of the Red River in north-western Louisiana. From above, the downtown grid lies alongside a wide bend in the river. Across the water is Bossier City, linked to Shreveport by several bridges. Interstates cross the city in both directions, and residential areas spread out west and south, gradually giving way to pine woods and bayous.
The city was founded in the 1830s after the removal of the Great Raft, a huge log jam that had blocked the Red River for miles. Shreveport then became a river port, and later a centre of the oil and gas industry. Cross Lake, a large reservoir to the west, forms a big body of water right next to the city. The Louisiana Hayride radio show once broadcast from here and gave Elvis Presley early exposure.
