Polder ditch patterns
Closely spaced drainage ditches divide the surrounding fields, a pattern shaped by centuries of reclaiming wet peatland. From above they form fine parallel lines that give the edges of the map a distinctive texture.

The map
Bergschenhoek lies just north of Rotterdam in South Holland and is part of the municipality of Lansingerland. Its map is a lesson in Dutch water management. Almost every line is straight. Drainage ditches run in parallel strips, roads follow dykes, and polder boundaries divide the land into long rectangles. The older village core sits along its main roads, and newer districts spread out around it in planned blocks.
The ground here lies below sea level, so water defines the shapes as much as the streets do. Narrow waterways separate one housing block from the next, canals edge the parks, and ditches cut the countryside beyond the houses into fine bands. To the east lie the Rottemeren, a chain of lakes and recreation areas along the River Rotte, which give the map softer, irregular outlines.
A Bergschenhoek map poster shows a place where town and polder are still closely interwoven. Rotterdam presses in from the south, yet green space and open water are never far away. The result is a calm, geometric composition, almost graphic in its regularity, that looks at home on a clean white wall. It is a picture of the Randstad at its most orderly.
Closely spaced drainage ditches divide the surrounding fields, a pattern shaped by centuries of reclaiming wet peatland. From above they form fine parallel lines that give the edges of the map a distinctive texture.
In the newer residential areas, canals and ponds run between the streets. Housing blocks appear as islands of linework, separated from one another by pale strips of water.
East of the village, the lakes and green banks along the River Rotte interrupt the straight polder geometry with looser, curving shorelines and winding paths.

Why Bergschenhoek
Many people move to Lansingerland for its green space, and others grew up among its canals and cycle paths. Both often want a map that reflects this ordered, watery landscape. It also makes a fitting housewarming gift for a new home in one of the village's districts.
