The map

About this Boujdour map poster

Boujdour sits on the Atlantic coast of Western Sahara, beside the headland long known to sailors as Cape Bojador. From above, the town is a regular grid of streets laid out on open desert ground, with a straight coastline on one side and empty, sand-coloured land stretching inland on the other.

The cape has a place in maritime history. For medieval European navigators it marked the limit of safe sailing, until the Portuguese captain Gil Eanes passed it in 1434 and opened the way for voyages further south along the African coast. A lighthouse still stands near the shore.

A Boujdour map poster has a stark, graphic quality. The tidy street grid, the sharp coastline and the wide blank desert around it make a composition with lots of empty space. In black and white, that emptiness becomes part of the design and gives the town real presence on the wall.

01

Cape Bojador

The headland beside the town was once seen as the edge of navigable waters, until Gil Eanes sailed past it in 1434.

02

Planned street grid

The town is laid out in regular blocks, and on the map this order stands out sharply against the unmarked desert around it.

03

Open Atlantic coast

A long, fairly straight shoreline runs along the western side, marking the clean boundary between the built town and the ocean.
