About this Chengam map poster
Chengam lies in Tiruvannamalai district in northern Tamil Nadu, near the foot of the Javadhu Hills. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets surrounded by farmland, irrigation tanks and scattered hills. Roads converge on the centre from several directions, reflecting its role as a local market town on routes across the region.
The town has a place in colonial history. In 1767, during the First Anglo-Mysore War, the Battle of Chengam was fought near here between British forces and the armies of Hyder Ali and the Nizam of Hyderabad. The hills and passes around the town gave the area strategic importance long before it became a quiet agricultural centre.
