The map

About this Ciudad Bolívar map poster

Ciudad Bolívar was founded in the eighteenth century on the south bank of the Orinoco, where the great river narrows. For decades it was known as Angostura, meaning the narrows. The old town climbs a low rocky hill above the water, and its compact grid of streets and plazas looks straight across to the far bank.

The city holds a firm place in South American history. In 1819 Simón Bolívar convened the Congress of Angostura here, which laid the groundwork for Gran Colombia, and the city was later renamed in his honour. It also gave its old name to Angostura bitters, first produced here by a German doctor before production moved to Trinidad.

The river dominates a Ciudad Bolívar map poster, and it is wide even at its narrowest. Upstream from the old centre, the Angostura Bridge crosses the Orinoco. Beyond the historic core, the city spreads south into newer districts and around several lagoons. The contrast between the dense old grid and the sweep of water gives the print a striking balance.

01

The narrows

The Orinoco contracts here to its narrowest point for a long stretch. Even so, the river fills a large part of the frame as a broad, calm band of water.

02

Casco histórico

The colonial centre sits on its hill, with a regular grid of streets and plazas stepping down toward the riverside promenade. It is compact and immediately recognisable.

03

Angostura Bridge

A long suspension bridge opened in 1967 carries the road across the Orinoco west of the city. It is one of the few fixed crossings anywhere along the river.
