About this Constanza map poster
Constanza sits in a broad valley at around 1,200 metres in the Cordillera Central, one of the highest towns in the Dominican Republic. From above the town is a compact cluster of streets in the middle of a flat, oval valley floor, ringed by steep forested mountains. The contrast between the level basin and the crowded contour lines around it is what makes the place so distinctive on a map.
The valley’s cool climate makes it the country’s leading area for vegetables and flowers, and fields of potatoes, garlic, lettuce and strawberries fill most of the flat land. Japanese families settled here as farmers in the 1950s and helped develop that agriculture. To the south, the high plateau of Valle Nuevo National Park rises into pine forest.
