About this Diemen map poster
Diemen sits directly east of Amsterdam, between the city and the IJmeer. From above, it is a mix of classic Dutch polder geometry and postwar planning. There are straight drainage canals, residential neighbourhoods laid out in rows and curves, and major infrastructure crossing it: the A1 and A10 motorways, several railway lines and the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal to the north.
Much of the land was once low-lying peat meadow. Large green spaces now show that past, including Diemerbos, a young woodland, and Diemerpark, laid out on a former waste site by the water. The town is closely tied to Amsterdam by metro, tram and train, and it has grown into a residential area for many people who work in the city.
