About this Estelle map poster
Estelle is a census-designated place in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, on the West Bank of the Mississippi across from New Orleans. The land is low and flat and was drained over time for housing, and the map shows this plainly: long, straight streets and subdivisions organised along drainage canals, with wetlands close by to the south.
Major roads run north toward the river and the older communities of the West Bank, forming the main axes of the area. Between them, residential streets fill rectangular blocks, broken by canals that carry water toward pumping stations. Further south the grid ends and the marshes and bayous of the Barataria region begin, a very different, fluid pattern.
