The map

About this Furano map poster

Furano lies in a broad basin close to the geographic centre of Hokkaido, a fact the town celebrates with its summer belly-button festival, the Heso Matsuri. From above, the centre is a neat grid of streets beside the railway and the Sorachi River. Beyond it, a patchwork of long rectangular fields stretches toward the mountains on either side.

The town is best known for two seasons. In July its hillsides turn purple with lavender, and farms such as Tomita draw visitors from across Japan. In winter the Furano ski area on the slopes west of town is famous for dry, light powder. The television drama "Kita no Kuni kara", filmed here, added to its fame.

A Furano map poster brings out the logic of a planned Hokkaido settlement: straight streets, a gridded farm landscape and rivers that curve gently through them, with mountain terrain rising at the edges. It is a quiet, orderly map with room to breathe around the town.

01

Central grid

The town centre follows a regular pattern of streets near the station, typical of Hokkaido's planned towns and easy to read at any poster size.

02

Field patchwork

Large rectangular farm plots fill the basin around the town. In summer this is lavender and vegetable country, and on the map it forms a strong geometric texture.

03

Ski slopes west

To the west, roads climb toward the Furano ski area on the mountain slopes, where the grid gives way to winding routes and forested terrain.

Why Furano

A map that means something

Furano is often hung by skiers who spent a winter chasing powder here, or by travellers who remember the lavender in July. The map keeps both seasons in mind without needing a photograph of either.

Put a trip date, a season or the ski area's coordinates in the title lines. Blueprint suits the snow country, Paper and Sand feel like a summer field, and Classic or Noir give a clean graphic look.
