The map

About this Gangavati map poster

Gangavati lies in Koppal district in northern Karnataka, on land irrigated by canals from the Tungabhadra dam. It is often called the rice bowl of Karnataka. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets and markets surrounded by a precise pattern of paddy fields, with canals running along the contours and dividing the green into long strips.

To the south, the ground breaks into the famous granite boulder hills of this region. Anegundi and the ruins of Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, lie close by across the river. The contrast between flat irrigated fields and rough, rocky ridges is one of the defining features of the landscape around the town.

A Gangavati map poster shows a dense market centre, roads running out to rice mills and villages, and the fine lines of the irrigation network reaching into the surrounding countryside. It is a map of an agricultural town whose shape depends on water.
